Charl joined the erstwhile partnership of Van Zyl Le Roux and Hurter as a professional assistant in 1988 and upon the incorporation of the partnership into a professional company in 1989, Charl became a director of VZLR.

Charl was appointed as the Managing Director of VZLR with effect from 1 March 2013 and is a member of various VZLR committees.

Charl is an expert civil litigator and has been involved in numerous prominent matters. In addition to civil litigation, Charl also has a keen interest in corporate law and business enterprises, having lectured on the subject at the Association of Law Societies for 8 years.

Charl’s practice includes matters relating to general High and Magistrates’ court litigation, corporate law, commercial law, insurance law, property law, the national credit act, the consumer protection act, debt collections, registration and de-registration of companies, the law of neighbours and defamation.

Charl is a keen sportsman and avid sports enthusiast, who enjoys playing golf and cricket. Charl has also completed several Duzi and Fish River Canoe marathons.

Prior to joining VZLR, Petro was an Assistant Registrar of Deeds and was, amongst others, involved in the training of Deeds Examiners and in the examination and registration of deeds.

Petro joined VZLR in 2002 as a candidate attorney and was admitted as an attorney, conveyancer and notary in June 2003. In 1996 Petro was the recipient of the DJ Friedland award from the Law Society for obtaining the highest testing scores in the conveyancing examinations for 1996.

Petro focuses on a wide variety of conveyancing including transfers, township establishments and all aspects relating to sectional titles, notarial deeds. In addition, Petro also has a specialized knowledge in registration and transfer of grant rights, which were applicable by virtue of specific Proclamations applicable to the former homelands.

During 2019 Petro published an article in the De Rebus, dealing with Donations Tax.

Petro is a passionate cook. She also enjoys baking cupcakes for special events at the request of her friends and family. When she is not in the office or the kitchen, Petro enjoys travelling, reading or walking long distances with her dog.

JC served his articles at VZLR in 2006 in the Conveyancing and Real Estate Development department. During February 2007, JC was appointed as a professional assistant at VZLR

after being admitted as an attorney, conveyancer and notary.  In September 2007 JC moved to Nelspruit where he heads up VZLR’s Nelspruit branch and during March of 2008, he was appointed as a director of VZLR. JC mostly deals with all aspects of conveyancing, property development and related property law matters.

He further attends to the administration of estates and trusts.  With the introduction of a new High Court in Nelspruit, JC looks forward to further establishing VZLR’s footprint in Nelspruit together with his professional team.

In 2003 and prior to joining VZLR, Tamara was employed as a Judges Clerk in the High Court of South Africa, situated in Pretoria. She joined VZLR in 2004 as a candidate attorney and was admitted as an

attorney, and appointed as a professional assistant in VZLR’s General Litigation department, in January 2007.

Tamara was appointed as a director of VZLR in September 2010 and practices in the General Litigation department.

Tamara’s practice includes matters relating to General Litigation, ABSA Vehicle Asset Finance, Insurance Law, Commercial Law, Family Law and debt recovery. Tamara also has a keen interest in legal cost, including the drafting of Bills of Cost

Apart from VZLR, Tamara also holds various other directorships in other companies and was recently elected to serve as counsellor on the Legal Practice Council of Gauteng, where she also chairs the province’s Risk and Compliance Committee.

Tamara is the Head of VZLR’s BEE and Employment Equity portfolios where she practically applies her passion for education, training and skills development of VZLR’s employees and in the process strives to impact the greater society we live in.

Wihann Joubert joined VZLR in 2010. Since he completed his LLB Degree at the University of South Africa the plight of the disenfranchised due to medical malpractice became his focus. Wihann was admitted as an Attorney during December 2012 and

immediately thereafter was appointed as a professional assistant in VZLR’s Personal Injury, Medical Law and Third Party Claims Department. Wihann’s Masters Degree juxta posed two contentious subjects currently heavily debated in South Africa: The Constitution of South Africa and Personal Injury caused by asphyxia at birth.

He completed his Master’s degree in Medical Law and Ethics cum laude at the University of Pretoria in 2017. Wihann appeared on National Television (Carte Blanche) in 2017 as subject matter specialist to contextualise Constitutional consequences of personal injury caused by medical negligence. Wihann further appeared as guest speaker at various SAMLA (South African Medico-Legal Association) events.

He is married to Marli (Graphic Designer) and a proud father of two beautiful girls (Lena and Katryn). In his past time Wihann breeds Bulldogs and enjoys visiting the family game farm in Limpopo Province.

Leenke obtained her LLB degree from the North-West University, Pukke Campus in Potchefstroom in December 2011.  She enrolled for a Masters in International Import- and Export Law, with specialised focus on Sea Zone Rights in January 2012.

Leenke started as a candidate attorney at Du Toit-Smuts & Mathews Phosa Inc (now known as Du Toit-Smuts & Partners) in Mbombela in January 2013. During January 2017, Vuyo joined VZLR as a candidate attorney and was subsequently appointed as a junior associate in VZLR‘s Corporate and Commercial Law Department in 2019.

He joined VZLR from January 2018 as a Candidate Attorney in the High Court Motion Department dealing mostly with applications for Personal Injury and Third Party Claims department, and any other applications. He was rotated to the Magistrate department from July 2018 to date dealing with Appearances on behalf of all departments within the firm.  

Lawrence heeded the calling of law after a career in the Master of the High Court Pretoria. He was an Administrative Clerk at the Master of the High Court, Pretoria. He is currently pursuing his studies with the University of Pretoria, enrolled for his Masters Degree in Intellectual Property.

Emmy graduated for her Bachelor of Arts in Law in 2015 and she obtained her LLB in 2017, both at the North – West University, Potchefstroom Campus. She thereafter commenced her articles as a Candidate Attorney at VZLR in 2018,

in the general litigation department which specialises in civil and action procedures in both the Magistrate and High Court. Emmy has also been exposed to an array of other legal fields including law of succession, administration of deceased estates, insurance law and banking law.

Emmy was admitted as an Attorney of the High Court of South Africa in 2019, (is awaiting her admission as a Notary Public) and has since hereinafter been an appointed as a Junior Associate in the general litigation department with us. She is currently completing her Master’s Degree in Mercantile Law through the University of Pretoria and has a keen interest in Contracts, Investments and Property.

Emmy has a bubbly personality and lights up any room at any given instance, despite the seriousness and how nerve wrecking our profession may be. She has recently committed to taking long distance walks on weekends and her favourite treat is taking a nap on a Sunday afternoon.

Frans joined the erstwhile partnership of Van Zyl Le Roux and Hurter in 1975 and became a partner in 1977. Upon the incorporation of the partnership into a professional company in 1989, Frans became a director of VZLR.

Frans focused on all forms of civil litigation, both in the High Courts and Magistrates’ Courts. Frans is an information technology expert and developed the information technology infrastructure of the firm from a modest first fax machine to the intricate infrastructure in place today.

Frans has a keen interest in attorney’s accounting and all aspects relating to the cost-effective operation of an attorney’s office. He was instrumental in developing VZLR’s cost consultancy department and the related cost consultancy computer programs used by VZLR’s cost consultants.

Frans retired as a director of VZLR in February 2014 after practicing as such for 37 years. He currently practices as a consultant at the firm, tending to civil High Court and related matters.

Frans is still available as a consultant to other attorneys for advice and evaluation of IT systems, infrastructure, attorney’s accounting and all aspects relating to the cost-effective operation of an attorney’s office, as well as cost consultancy computer programs for the drafting of bills of costs.

Frans was an avid sportsman and now spends his free time tending to the needs of his farms and family.

Anton joined the erstwhile partnership of Van Zyl Le Roux and Hurter in 1977 as a candidate attorney, was admitted as an attorney and appointed as a professional assistant in 1979 and became a partner in 1980.

Upon the incorporation of the partnership into a professional company in 1989, Anton became a director of VZLR.

Anton previously headed VZLR’s Corporate and Commercial department and holds a Certificate in Mergers and Acquisitions. During his final year at the University of Pretoria, Anton was a junior lecturer in the Department of Commercial Law. He also lectured for candidate attorneys on behalf of the Association of Law Societies.

Anton was involved in a number of prominent cases in the Supreme Court of Appeal, including matters relating to the review of an Arbitrator’s Award, Court Orders in respect of “pension interest” in matrimonial matters, the ownership of immovable property of a church vis-à-vis the congregation, as well as the request for information in terms of Section 50 of the Promotion of Access to Information Act.

Anton retired as a director of VZLR at the end of February 2019, after having been with the firm for 42 years. He currently practices as a consultant at the firm attending to Corporate and Commercial matters.

Odette obtained her LLB degree from the University of South Africa in 2014 and attended Law School at the University of Pretoria in 2015. Odette heeded the calling of law after a career in the media. She was a Journalist and Photographer in the employment of Media24, and later a Subeditor in the employment of Capital Media. She was awarded 7th place in the category Photographer of the Year in 2009 in the national Sanlam competition for Community Press. She is also a published writer and obtained a National Diploma in Fine Arts at the Vaal Triangle University of Technology in 1993.

She has a keen interest in Legal Philosophy, Ethics and Religion. Other interests include creative writing and diamond evaluation.
